Why won't a sprained knuckle on my left hand get better?

The third finger of my left hand was bent back badly while surfing on July 5, 2007. The big knuckle is still noticeably sore and swollen. I've had x-rays and an MRI which indicate no fracture. I don't know what to do next but the injury seems to be not getting better?

Bonanza....Hands, and fingers, can take a long time to heal, probably because you are constantly using it ( hard not to ). Tell your MD if it persists in being a problem or gets worse (reduced range of movement, color, feeling). Sometimes a physical therapist can help. My experience, Medic/Firefighter x 30 yrs, have busted just about every finger, wrist and 'trigger-thumb'. Poor hands, we beat the sht outa them, don't we?

you really need to immobilize it for a week or more tell the dr to splint it

See if you can purchase a brace that will hold your knuckle immobile at least overnight if not during the day until it gets better. Have you tried cold compresses? They tend to shrink swelling. Might also want to try ibuprofen on your "bad" days.

I had a problem with the center knuckle of my right index finger -- still have trouble, actually, since I have other health issues -- and using a splint really helped me. I'm not sure how easy it would be to find something to brace your knuckle, but it would be worth checking into.

I hope this helps you!

I have had this sprain on my right thumb since Sept 2005 and until today the pain is still unbearable when the weather is cold and if i write a lot. It even cramps at times. I have gone for a x-ray and there is no problem. The psysiotherapist told me that the tissue might have worn out and a surgery can be done if i wanted but it is not recommended coz i am still in my teens. He mentioned that this sprains and cramps only occurs to older people over 50 years and he wonder why i am having it. He made a thumb support for me to wear whenever i freel the pain. When even at times it doesnt work.
