Is dequervain's syndrome considered an injury if it happens while working on the job? |
I have always worked with my hands. I started a new job that had alot of repitious work. My wrists had swollen up and the doctor said it was deqervains syndrome. I have never in my life had a hand injury. This happened on the job. So is it considered an injury??? Or is it something that was bound to happen?? I would check with your Dr. The employer could argue that you have developed this from using the computer a lot etc. You know how they love to pay out for workman's comp. (sic). All you could do is to try to blame it on your work and see if it is possible with your Dr. first and see if he will back you up. Deqervain's syndrome doesn't have a clearcut cause, although it's associated with over use of the wrist in some cases. I don't know if they would consider it an injury for the purposes of Workman's compensation or not, they might also claim it simply was a job related irritation of something already existing. There is arguement to support both ways of it. Although it can be treated, if the doctor feels your job aggrivates it, you might as well consider a change of job. Hopefully that will be possible with where ever you are currently working. I'd have to say you will have to put this one to the board to determine, and see what they have to say about it. Meantime, you have to change the work to give your wrist a break. It won't go away otherwise. De Quervain's is a specific inflammation of tendons at the base of the thumb (wrist). Although there are a number of possible causes (pregnancy and arthritis are but a few), it is a well known and recognized occupational repetitive strain injury, specifically with certain movements of the wrist and thumb. If you are in doubt, a good occupational physician or occupational therapist could evaluate your job and injury. These types of injuries are preventable, usually by changing the way the worker does their job, or equipment change, etc. It is highly unlikely that your case is Dequervain's syndrome but spliting and pain killer should help it. I think with your repetitious hand movement job it is highly likely that it can be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (median nerve compression). |
