Washing hands constantly disorder?

I have a problem it started when i was at high school. when i get really stressed i have a terrible habbit of going upstairs and washing my hands a dozen of times. Sometimes this used to include my mouth, also i do not eat or drink anything after my mum and dad. I eventually got better when i started college but recently after losing my nana who meant the world to me i loved her more than my mum and dad. it has started again. is there anything i can do to stop this because im losing my relationship with parents. Also after touching someones hand i use my right hand not left i use everything to eat with my left and for shaking hands with my right,

you are obsessive compulsive like me :-(
try to relax, it usually makes the hand washing end quicker
or try picking a set number to count to before you stop washing.

for the hand shaking thing i am not so sure as to what you should do, try to do something to break up the routine
and hopefully you will get over it.

shame that not so many people understand how hard it is to stop.

i don't think so. but if you're washing your hand cause you feel it's very dirty, than something's wrong.
and i'm sorry for your loss

talk to your GP you might be prescribed some anti depressants and you could ask for bereavement counselling

Yes it sounds like you have a problem that needs addressing. You conquered it before so follow the same procedure again honey. If your not getting better go and enlist the help of your GP or a hypnotherapist if you can afford it. Good luck to you.

Obsessive compulsive disorder. You can get help.

you know, I have a washing hands thing, it's not to the quantity of you, but I do wash them a lottttt.

The only thing I remember from my youth was one day being made to dance with a boy at school and he'd been baking something in home economics with digestive biscuits. they stunk and now I stunk and it nearly made me gag.

Such a small thing made me wash my hands lots from then on... weird eh? lol

If this has taken over your life, then maybe you should seek some help, you're certainly not the first person to feel this way.
Hollyoaks even did a character with OCD a wee while ago, he eventually got councelling and overcame it.

You may have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), visit your doctor you may need CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) to help you combat it, especially if it is linked to stress. It could be a defence mechanism on your part as it is something you can control.

Sorry for your loss and I hope you get the right treatment soon.

OCD. See a doctor asap - it will get worse at times of stress or if you are feeling rundown - that is, unfortunately the nature of the beast. Get on the waiting list for some psychotherapy. I know people hate that kind of advice, but it really is the best thing you can do.
If it helps, you're not alone with this one. I fell out with my parents - they took it very personally that I wouldn't use the cutlery they'd given me, or that I was cleaning up after myself to an unnecessary degree. They thought it was me trying to tell them they weren't doing a good enough job. Obviously, that wasn't it at all. People find it difficult to understand it, but do try and discuss it with them. They need to realise that it is an illness, and it is not your (or their!) fault.

This sounds entirely like obsessive compulsive disorder. For the quite comprehensive Wikipedia definition have a look at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive-c...

It appears you overcame this by yourself the first time, but it is something which can be induced by stress / emotion - hence the reoccurence now.

It is widely accepted that this does sevely impede quality of life - so I would certainly try and do something about it. But, to be honest, you are far better speaking to someone professional rather than Yahoo. I am not sure if you are from UK, or US - but see your Dr / GP as a first port of call and they will be able to suggest the next best step.

If you absolutely refuse to see a professional, then have a look at this:

http://www.ocduk.org/

It is the UK support group for OCD, and provides some good advice and "four steps" you can use to help address the issue by yourself.

When people are stressed, sad or anxious it comes out in different ways.. some people subconsciously put it into worrying about other things.

What your describing sounds like classic Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, it can be there all the time but gets worse when life gets harder.

Your not alone, I lived with a guy who washed his hands for about an hour every time he went to the toilet.. I don't know if he did it other times because people get good at hiding things but I'm pretty sure he did.

You need to go to your doctor to be diagnosed properly and try to get refereed to a psychologist or a councillor.. There are also medications that could help if needs be.

Here is a link to the UK national OCD support charity.. they have information, advice, support groups and all sorts of stuff:

Also MIND is a great website:

That is a symptom of OCD,obsessive compulsive disorder.
Anafranil medication is one of the best available to help & if you ask your doctor he may give it you.

It's called obsessive compulsive disorder and probably the last thing you need are anti depressants. They may mask one or two of the symptoms (if you're lucky), but you probably need counselling for bereavement and cognitive therapy which will give you and insight into why you are doing these behaviours and find a way to change the thought processes that make your psyche indulge in them on a physical level.

This is called OCD, I have it too. But I need to constantly check windows doors, i count in 6's I spell out on my hands, and on and on it goes.
Get help now, its gets worse.
I am in theropy now for the past 7 months, I wish I had have sought help sooner, but theropy is slowly helping.
Good Luck x
