I have an eating disorder. Can I tell anyone?

I am not underweight to be considered anorexic, I am not bulimic either. I want to get help before it gets out of hand, but I feel I can't tell anyone 'cause they wont believe me as I'm not skinny. They'll assume I'm an attention seeker. I weigh 120 lb at 5'7, which is normal. I can't tell my parents, or teachers, or best friend cause she has a very negative view on people with eating disorders. What can I do?

Tell your friend. The reason why she looks down upon it is because it's bad for you and she'd only be conserned about your wellbeing. She'd be a good friend to tell you your problem is wrong and to help you get over it. You're completely normal, and if your worried about getting fat then DIET (that doesn't mean stop eating) and exercise.

Good luck

120 is actually very skinny for 5'7.. close to underweight. Tell your school councilor. Really they won't think you are a bad person. Tons of girls get eating disorder. It's good to get a handle on it before it get bad. Because they can get bad. Please get help :)

Doctor?
Counciler?
good luck
i hope you get better soon

I know how you feel. Like you know this is going to be a problem for you, I'm there myself. I'm not skinny, I find myself just dreading each meal. Hmmm .. Sorry I couldn't be much help. Maybe ur best friend would surprise you, try telling her? I'm sure you've both been through alot together before, so I'm sure she would be there for you. After all she knows you better than anyone on here, take it from there. Good luck =)

Talk to an adult you trust. Or a really good friend you can trust. And ask them to support you if you need to talk to a doctor or therapist.

I've had an eating disorder for 4 years now and Im currently struggling to overcome it. Its one of the hardest things Ive ever had to do.

Please, please, please get help. I would never want anyone to go through what I do.

If you think you have an eating disorder it is a good idea to get some help... the thing is it doesn't have to be serious... Many people have troublesome relationships with food and with their bodies, the most important thing is to realise what are healthy and what are not healthy attitudes towards eating and your weight etc. and try to gain some healthy and positive habits and attitudes. Some types of therapy can be good for this and most health workers will agree that it is better to treat these types of illnesses as early as possible so you don't need to be dangerously underweight to be treated. Eating disorders cannot always be categorized into Anorexic or Bulimic. You should talk to a health care professional or even find a self-help book to begin with. When you tell someone make sure you tell them how you feel and that you do not feel you can cope with these feelings on your own anymore and that the last thing you want is to end up seriously ill so that is why you are seeking some help now. I would not talk to your friend until later on as she sounds very judgemental and probably not very helpful!

you need to tell someone or you cant get any help.

the best person to tell is a doctor as they can refer you for treatment and then you can work on getting better and get help. But thats not the same a support, it will happen like once a week and support needs to be there as much as possible, no one who knows what an eating disorder realy is will judge you, you dont have to be skinny to have issues with food and things dont have to get bad before you get help.

Just have quiet words with your friends or even teachers you trust, this can help lift the burden and help you feel more able to cope with any therapy or councelling.

Also try the website www.b-eat.co.uk which has a message board which is excellent- and no you dont have to be skinny to use it!

Many very good suggestions from very genuine people. I would suggest that you find an eating disorder group's number in the phone book and get their advice on your situation before it turns into something very serious. Nip it in the bud and it will be resolved in no time. Leave it to develop and you could be in trouble. Best of luck anyway.

You should really talk to your parents as soon as possible to get the help you need now! I have had an eating disorder for over 2 years now, and I didn't tell anyone, coz for a while I was a normal weight....then when my weight got so low I looked very anorexic the problem was way out of hand. I wish I'd asked for help sooner. Don't assume that there isn't a problem because you're not underweight....get help now, before you are underweight, as there are so many health problems associated with being underweight (eg. loss of periods, loss of bone density, anaemia, loss of hair - but an increase in hair in all the wrong places, like on your face and arms, poor circulation, poor brain function, kidney/liver/heart problems....the list goes on....). Get help now. Talk to your parents, and book in to see your doctor, who can refer you to someone suitable to help you through recovery. It might take a few tries to find a specialist that you trust and are comfortable with, so don't settle on the first one you see if it doesn't feel right. If you don't trust them then you're not going to fully recover.
All the best, and I think you're really brave and smart for thinking about recovery now - before you dig yourself in too deep.
Recovery is hard, and at times you'll think you can't do it. There will be tears and arguments - but eventually the smiles and laughter will outweigh it. Remember life is there for living and enjoying.....every day won't be perfect, but with an eating disorder you can't fully live or experience your life - your brain just doesn't function properly, and your body is too exhausted to let you get the most out of life.
All the best, take care of yourself and I hope you make a full recovery. :)

I would go to the counselor at school. Find someone you trust, an adult. I think you will find that all those people you named actually would believe you.
