What sort of people would a psychiatrist work with? |
i have a keen interest in becoming a psychiatrist, but there are some mental disorders that, due to family, make me extremely uncomfortable, and some, on the other hand, that i am extremely interested to find out about and understand. Do not go into the profession if you have knowingly dealing with unresolved issues with this and thank you for your candor. MANY folks with their own, undealt with, issues go into psychiatry and psychology and end up doing their clients much more harm than good. Think this out a bit further. If you work out your discomfort, you could become very effective. If not-you may wish to limit your (eventual) practice and specialize in a specific area that you are comfortable with. A psychiatrist can work with a plethora of people, ranging from people who have depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorders, to people who are considered socio and psychopathic. It depends where you'd be working, etc. If you intend to go into criminal psychology, you'd obviously be working with some very mentally ill. If you work in a mental institution you may only see depressed/anxious people, but you could perhaps also work with people suffering from disorders such as schizophrenia. If you work in a rehabilitation clinic, you'll be working with drug and alcohol addicts. |
