It's a Narcotic that has Morphine in it. It is a downer that is often used to remove pain (it was used long ago for an anesthesia).
It doesn't make you hallucinate... I'm not sure why people say it is, aside from the fact that using too much can put you into an almost dream state, but that's similar to sleeping.
It is natural from the poppy plant (which is why poppy seeds show Opiates in drug tests).
