is there anything i can do to stop it?

First off, stressing about the hair loss could actually add to any stress you have and cause more so get to your doctor and have them give you a complete physical.
They will want to check your Thyroid, hormones in general and a series of other things that could contribute.
As well, your hair does go through a dormant period where it does not grow for awhile and the hair will fall out some during that time - kind of like your skin sloughing about every 3-6 weeks or so. Make a list of things that have been going on and concerns you have and make sure the Dr. hears you out. Too many of us allow ourselves to get the "diagnosis of the day" without speaking up.
Weight loss and change in appearance along with the hair loss should signal you to get to your doctor and find out what's going on.
Could just be a lack of vitamins/minerals in your diet which can be easily corrected.
Good luck to you, I'm sure it's something very easily corrected with medication or diet.

its a fact that hair loss occurs due to tension,so please try to find the solution of problem rather than thinkin bout it,n use sarsoon oil to nourish your hair,or amla oil.take care

Hair loss can be attributed to stress; however, it is probably best to consult a physician since a number of other things can be the cause. I experienced hair loss during a stressful period in college; it wasn't accompanied by weight loss though.

It could be any thing from overprosessing your hair (perming, straight ironing, coloring) to hypothyroidism.

Go to the doctor and get a check up and tell him whats going on. He may have you get some blood work done to check your thyroid and see if you need vitamins and stuff.

Hon if you have sudden hair loss there are several things it could be. THe first thing I would recommend you do is see your Doctor because hyperthyroidism can cause hair loss and if that's what you have you need to have meds to fix it. it's a simple blood test that can tell you for sure. The Dr may also take a hair sample and/or check your scalp to further determine what the problem may be. My advice to you would be to not be vigorous when you are brushing or washing your hair, stay away from any chemical treatments until you know what is wrong and don't traumatize your head any more than necessasary by wearing it in a tight braid, pony tails etc. Listed below is an article that list 5 other reasons for hair loss and typical treatment for it. I hope you find it helpful. Best of Luck to you.

Alapeasha. Often a result of stress. I lost all my hair in a 2 week period when I was 25, being evicted from my rented room was the prime cause. I found a new apartment but no improvement so I saw a homoeopath 1 week later it started retuning. Now it's old age that's taking hold + one of the symptoms of myotonic dystrophy is frontal hair loss.
My doctor said there was no cure (1986). Chances are good that you'll de-stress yourself & it'll grow back. Lose of 5 lbs is insignificant.

While I'm agree what it mostly has to do with stress, I also understand what this is just amateurish approach - so you better come see your doctor, or at least get an educational guide on hair loss issues (e.g. here - http://fon.gs/hairguide - comes with a DVD) - I believe what this case was researched many times by now.
