Can iron deficiency lead to hair loss?

I have the following symptoms. Hair loss, fatigue, cold extremities (hands worse than feet), night sweats, irritability. I have had iron deficiency before but I have never lost my hair, my doctor thought it was because of my switching birth control but I switched back to my old one and the hair loss has not improved. I used to have really thick hair and there is no hair loss in my family, some of my uncles have lost their hair but that is just on my dads side and both of my parents have a full head of hair.

Hi There,

Yes, an Iron deficiency can lead to hair loss, among other health problems. I'd consult the opinion of your doctor again and perhaps consult another physician as well. Additionally, stress is among one of the most frequent causes of hair loss among women, so you might consider that as a possibility.

I battled hair loss for years, but I'm a guy, so that's to be expected. Last summer I decided to have a hair restoration and immediatly after the procedure I started a blog, BattleAgainstBald.com, to document the results of my procedure. In addition to my hair restoration results I provide a plethora of information on hair loss, it's many causes, and the methods available to correct it.

I encourage you to check out the female hair loss section of the blog, as I believe you'll find it to be a valuable resource.

Yes, there seems to be a connection. Please go to webmd.com and enter iron deficiency into the search. It will bring up an article on hair loss, which may give you some of the information you're looking for for. Hope it helps and that your dr. is able to get things straightened out for you. Good luck.

Yes it can lead to hair loss. But main things are genetical & due to use of chemicals.
