Which medicine is causing the hair loss?please help me!!!!!!!!!?

I was taking Imuran but i stopped it...i am still taking Pentasa for my Crohn's disease....i have had hair loss...and thinning...which medicine was the culprit? Imuran states that hair loss is a definite side effect...pentasa says that less then 1% experience alopecia....but also i have experienced acne and that is a result of the pentasa as well....so please help me figure this out...thank you

both cause hair loss, if you look on the medline information....you are caught between a rock and a hard place, because you need both meds.
I would talk to you specialist and ask if there is anything on the market that could help/////

I can't answer that but I want to say God Bless You, I had ulcerative colitis and my colon was removed and small intestine reconsructed....call your doctor and ask him is what to do. The likely answer would be the Imuran because it states that hair loss and a definitely side effect.

Have you tried Asacol? I liked it a lot.

Call your pharmacist and he/she will tell you which one is the most likely culprit. Keep on your meds though if they're helping, get a nice wig if you must.

Imuran states that hair loss is a definite side effect. It might time time to repair the damage. Meanwhile you might want to have you blood checked for anemia or iron deficiency. That causes hair loss.

You may have a reaction to the meds you are on.
Taking them together may have some affect on you.

Alopecia (hair loss) may occur with Imuran as well as it is a possible side effect of the medication

Oral ulceration occurs rarely with therapeutic doses but may be seen with large doses. Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea can appear mainly at higher doses. Acute pancreatitis was also
reported following long term azathioprine treatment.
Suppression of the bone marrow mainly leukopenia and occasionally pancytopenia may be seen after therapeutic doses and overdoses of azathioprine. Septic shock due to this immunosuppression may occur. Hepatic dysfunction
(hepatocellular and cholestatic), venocclusive disease and haemangioma of the liver following azathioprine therapy were documented. Acute restrictive lung disease, interstitial nephritis and a case of progressive leukoencephalopathy after 4 years azathioprine therapy were reported.

Skin rash, alopecia and urticaria and a case of palmar-plantar erythema with desquamation and pain were also documented

Yep! That's what it is, Pentasa. I have Ulcerative Colitis and take ASACOL. My hair falls out eveyday. It sucks. It's getting so thin.

Azathioprine is a chemotherapy drug, now rarely used for chemotherapy but more for immunosuppression in organ transplantation, autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease. It is a pro-drug, converted in the body to the active metabolites 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioinosinic acid.
Mesalazine (INN, BAN), also known as Mesalamine (USAN) or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammation of the digestive tract (Crohn's disease) and mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Mesalazine is a bowel-specific aminosalicylate drug that is metabolized in the gut and has its predominant actions there, thereby having fewer systemic side effects.
It is seen that Mesalamine (Pentasa) cause slight hair loss (uncommon side effect). Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
Please see the web pages for more details on Azathioprine (generic name) Imuran (brand name) and Mesalamine (generic name) Pentasa (brand name).
