HRT or Birth Control for POF?

I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) when I was 21. I've been taking Ortho-Tricyclen (Trinessa generic) for a while now and a different doctor (because insurance change) wants me to change to Premphase (HRT). I am 37 years old now.

I also have low sex drive and don't want to get worse with switching meds. The doctor said there is nothing really I can do to increase sex drive.

I also have been taking Zoloft for 8 years for Anxiety. I think that might be a cause of low sex drive.

I appreciate any advice or experience you have.

I realize that Brutally Honest is a top answerer, but I would steer clear of her advice in this situation. It is obvious she has no medical training or she would not advise you to stop the birth control pills and just proceed with early menopause. Untreated POF is a set-up for early heart disease and osteoporosis for starters. You are way way too young to be dealing with those types of problems. There are other issues (vaginal dryness and discomfort, hot flushes, insomnia, mood changes....) but those other 2 are bad enough to warrant continuation of the hormonal therapy for your overalll general health. Either birth control or HRT will achieve the desired results. I wonder, have you had a bone density scan to assess for osteoporosis? It is fairly standard with such early pof.
As far as sex drive in females, it is not so easy as men since so much of it is tied up in our brains and emotions and feelings for the individual. Counselling can be very helpful in alot of these cases. However, you are taking meds that can have an affect and may benefit from some changes.
Actually, birth control pills will decrease sex drive by decreasing your amount of circulation testosterone, talk to your doctor about this is you need it explained in more detail but that is what happens. you may be inherently low in testosterone anyway since your ovaries may not be producing any. you might talk to him about HRT with an androgen component added to help increase your libido.
On to the zoloft. All ssri's can decrease libido, zoloft is one of the better ones in the sense that it has less of this effect but it is definitely still a side effect of zoloft. Many are helped with the addition of a little welbutrin to the zoloft, as it can actually help increase your sex drive.
Do a little internet search on antidepressants and libido as well as androgen replacement and come to your next visit educated. Your doctor will appreciate it and should be happy to work with you to achieve your goals.

Anti-depressant/anxiety meds can cause your low sex drive. I know Zoloft is a pretty potent drug. Is this the one your doctor started you on? There are other meds for anxiety out there that might be as effective and not have as great an impact on your sex drive.
As for the other meds, If you're uncomfortable with your doctor's desire to change your meds, then you need to have a heart to heart talk with him and have him explain in detail the reasons for the change. Also express your discomfort in this. If you feel like he's not giving you a good answer or doesn't seem to care about your hesitation to change, then you need to get a second opinion.

If you're not trying to conceive, then I don't see a reason to delay menopause. I started when I was almost 36...but I was done with babies.

When I was on some anti-anxiety drugs, they caused REALLY weird things to happen, including ZERO libido, mood swings, and in one case even more anxiety!

If you could, I'd recommend trying to wean off the Zoloft, and maybe stopping the BCP's. If you find that your meno symptoms are really severe, then I'd say try the HRT, but maybe you should just let things progress on their own.....

There are also some mood-boosters for women; I don't know how well they work, but it couldn't hurt to try.
