Hpv/genital warts/cervical cancer?

this always confused me when people would talk about this.
so is HPV genital warts?
or is genital warts a certin type of HPV?
cause i know there's over 100 types of HPV..
So if you have HPV does that mean you have genital warts?
But then isnt cervical cancer a type of HPV?
so you if you have cervical cancer AND genital warts? what? i'm so lost. anyone who can clarify for me lol

Okay, so there are many types of HPV. Certain types of HPV might possibly lead to cervical cancer. If you have HPV, it DOES NOT mean you will necessarily get cervical cancer. Certain types of HPV are responsible for genital warts. Most of the types of HPV that are responsible for genital warts are NOT found to be responsible for cervical cancer. There is a vaccine for certain types of HPV, and it's showing awesome results, so go get it!!

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a large family of types. They are about 100 HPV types. HPV are numbered in the order in which they were found. 70 or so of these types are types that cause planter warts; warts on your hands or feet any where other than genital. 30 HPV types affect the genital area. These 30 HPV types are divided into two categories high risk HPV and low risk HPV types. Low risk HPV types are rarely seen in cancers. Low risk HPV types 6 and 11 are the types that cause most visible genital warts. High risk HPV types are the HPV types that have been found in cancers. Having a high risk HPV does not mean that a high risk HPV will progress to cancer.

Virtually all cervical cancer is due to a present progressive HPV infection. When you have visible genital warts you have HPV. The genital HPV types are considered STI鈥檚 because they are usually transmitted through sex or sex play. Warts of the hands and feet or not of thegenital areas are also HPV.

Here in the US we do a good job of screening. When your doctors finds abnromal cell changes of the cervix he will monitor your situation and treat if he/she feels it is necessary. Many times a woman builds immuity to her acquired HPV types and the virus goes into a sleeping stage. Sometimes a doctor needs to treat these cell changes to stop the progression of the virus and help your body idenitify the virus.

Many of us have more than one HPV type. You can have genital warts of the vulva and cell changes of the cervix. Many of us have more than one HPV type.

Ask your doctor about the HPV vaccine. It prevents two low risk HPV types 6 and 11. The types that cause most visble genital warts and two high risk HPV types. The vaccine works best when given before you have engaged in sex or sex play. Since it does not prevent all HPV types you still need to have a Pap test each year.

The genital HPV types can be divided into two broad groups (low-risk and high-risk HPVs) depending upon their association (or lack of association) with cancers of the lower genital tract.
Low-risk HPV types (6, 11, 42,43,44, 54,61,70,72, and 81) are virtually never found in cancers.
High-risk HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 73, and 82) have been identified in cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, anus, and penis.
The most common types detected in genital warts are HPV 6 and HPV 11.
The most common HPV type detected in both normal women and in women with cervical cancer is HPV 16.
The majority of cervical cancers (80%) are caused by just 4 HPV types (16, 18, 31, and 45).
