Is HPV the cause of Genital Warts or is Genital Warts the cause of HPV? And is an abnormal pap related?

I was reading up on genital warts because I seem to have a bump down there... and I vaguely remember having a similar bump over a year ago.

The information I was reading is a little hard to understand. I was basically wondering if I would have HPV and genital warts could develop from it. Or do you get genital warts first and contract HPV from it?

Also I have had a few pap smears and the last two came up as abnormal, but I was not told they were HPV, so they just did a biopsy to make sure they weren't cancerous. Wouldn't they be able to tell right away if I had HPV from the pap? I always thought that is what it tested for.

Either way I have an appointment on Friday for a biopsy for my abnormal pap so I just wanted to get some input before the doctor appointment.

You were probably told that you have LSIL, this is Low grade Squamous cell Intra-epithelial Lesions. Hi. HPV is the virus that causes genital warts. It is not always seem during a pap test because you need to have visible bumps to test. Please make sure you research HPV as it does not fully go away. Have your annual pap to make sure it does not change. There are several strands of HPV and not all will cause cancer but it's better to be safe. Also, use precaution when having any sexual contact. People think that HPV is only risky for women but can cause penile cancer in men.

I'm glad you are going to follow up on the abnormal Pap smear results. HPV increases the risk of cancer. If you're not sure what the bumps are, just ask your health practitioner.

Warts, genital and otherwise, as well as cervical cancer (indirectly) are caused by one of the Human Pappiloma Viruses. There are different types, which cause those different problems. If you are willing, the new HPV vaccine is a good idea. It doesn't prevent genital warts that would be on your vulva, or vagina, but does stop the type that causes cancer. When I was first diagnosed with HPV they didnt tell me right away they called me a few days after my appointment. I was only 14 when I contracted the STD and the doctor said since I was so young my immune system was able to fight off the STD naturally. I am 18 now and my pap smears come back normal. HPV mis genital warts, HPV is just the medical term for it.

If I were you, I would contact my doctor's office and ask point blank "do I have HPV?" A lot of times the doctor's don't tell you that's what you have. I don't know why other than the fact that they still don't know a whole lot about the virus. You could have gotten it the very first time you had unprotected sex no matter how many years ago that was. It can lie dormant for many years. Another thing is that you may not have any symptoms whatsoever. Always be sure to have an annual papsmear. That's how I found out about mine. I had NO SYMPTOMS at all.
