HMO and PPO..whats the difference?

i have HMO and i'm 23. i'm married and plan on getting pregnant. what is better for me. I live in southern california. i have no idea what my HMO covers and what it doesnt. I have Blue Cross Classic HMO. THanks

HMO is a Health Maintenance Organization the health care provider signs a contract with the insurance to provide services listed under the contract. This require pre-authorization before test and procedures are preformed.
PPO is Preferred Provider Organization this is a managed care medical plan like HMO service providers physicians, hospitals, and other health care professionals have to sign a contract with the insurance. they are called the preferred providers. If you have a Blue Cross Classic HMO you should be covered under the plan. In addition you need to have your employer give you another package of the type of plan you have or contact the insurance and ask questions. their phone # should be on the back of your medical card. Hope this give you some insight. I really do believe you are covered. after the birth of your baby you will have to add the baby to the plan. You should get this take care of ASAP.
Good LUCK.

PPO is the best. You have the ability of picking your own Dr and where you go. HMO is cheaper but you have to stick with the list of providers that your company will accept as an HMO Dr. PPO is worth the extra money.
