What's wrong with having HMO?

I know this is going to sound ignorant, but on t.v. shows and movies they always joke about how bad HMO is, can someone explain. I know nothing about health insurance, and if it is in fact a shady health insurance, what would be a better alternative?

I once worked for an HMO at a management level and it was very eye-opening. The big problem with HMOs are that they are a bureaucracy. The more levels of the bureaucracy, the less important the patient becomes. He is simply a statistic...a number on a spreadsheet...not a human being in need.

HMOs SHOULD be simply a management structure, but they impose themselves into the care of the patient. Physicians are given performance standards that have nothing to do with quality care...but controlling costs. They tell them how long the patient should be in the hospital, what types of prescription medications they can (or can't) prescribe, they force patients to go to certain providers...even if they don't meet the need of the patient in some way.
