Will my HMO (HIP) pay for my hearing aid?

Will my HMO (HIP) pay for my hearing aid?

Each HMO is different and each has their own philosophy (some pays for certain things and others don't).

The only way to know is to look at your policy or to call customer service of your HMO.

Sometimes it depends upon the severity of your medical problem (i.e. the degree of deafness and/or quality of life improvement if it is approved on a case by case basis) and there is also the existing condition issue.

GOOD LUCK!

Most likely not. I've been wearing hearing aids since I was 10 and insurance (my parents or my own) has never paid for one.

Why, I don't know. I wish they did. Hearing aids have cost my parents and me thousands over the years.

Let me add that I have been hearing impaired since birth and have lost approximately 60% of my hearing. I took speech therapy as a child and I can speak normally...I can even sing.

It all depends on which one you have..if you are on medicare, there may be some assistance, but not much!

Also it depends on your age and what state you are in and whether your insurance plan is traditionally insured or self-insured. Traditionally insured plans in some states are mandated to provide hearing aid coverage.

Another factor is whether your hearing loss could be fixed by surgery. If you are chosing a hearing aid over surgery, it is possible to persuade the insurer to cover your hearing aid despite an exclusion because the hearing aid solution is cheaper than the surgery solution

One more thing is vocational rehabilitation -- I know people who needed hearing aids to continue to be employable, sometimes you can get assistance from those organizations

Good luck !

I don't know your age or sex, but I finally got an insurance co. to pay for mine because the speech pathologist told them that I need to be able to hear my children when my husband isn't home. I'm not sure how she did it, but if you're a mom with little kids, maybe this will help.

Good luck with that. Only insurance company I've ever seen cover it was American General, and a few self insured companies I've worked for. Apparently hearing is seen as a luxury. Shame on the state legislatures that don't pass legislation to mandate hearing aid coverage for medical insurers.
