HMO=health maintenance organization, a health insurance set up with a gate keeper, your primary care physician, where in order to have much of anything done you must go thru your gatekeeper. Often the cheapest, but poor access to speciality care and tests

PPO=preferred provider ?organization=health insurance scheme where you can see whichever doctor you prefer as long as they are a preferred provider, no gatekeeper to get to a speciality, but not all doctors will be preferred providers and generally more expensive per month
