HIV from deep kissing?

Ok, I remember one of the co-discovers of HIV suggested that HIV could be transmitted via deep kissing and the CDC has one documented case. I was wondering what the chances of contracting HIV through prolonged deep kissing? I'm still confused about whether it is a risk or not

Deep kissing is not a HIV risk in itself, unless you are swallowing pints of the infected person's saliva (yuck!), this is because the amount of virus present in saliva is so small.
To pose a risk, one or both of you would need to have open, bleeding cuts in/around your mouth.

It is not a risk. You can't catch HIV by casual, everyday contact.

HIV can not be transferred through kissing another person - the research suggests that the disease can be transferred through wounds around the mouth but you can not get HIV from saliva. They believe you would have to drink approximately 20 buckets of someones saliva before contracting the disease! There is not a chance the CDC's case was from just kissing - it is more likely through the transfer of blood or bodily fluids that got into a wound.

Its not a risk, unless you both have a open cut in your mouth.

can be transmitted by blood to blood contact as well as sex.

So if you have both have cuts on your lips, recent dental work, mouth ulcers, cold sores etc. it is theoretically possible to transmit it by some over-enthusiastic kissing. Nibbling lips and tongue probably increase the risk.

That said, based on most cases of HIV being tracable to closer contact the risk seems to be low.

So you probably should be a bit careful about who you kiss, particularly if you have any recent dental work, cuts etc. (if nothing else there are lots of other diseases you can cath mouth to mouth). But everything in life has risks, so it's probably not worth panicking about it.

If you have a HIV positive partner, it probably depends a lot on their viral load, it is worth discussing potential transmission methods in detail with their doctor (if they don't mind you comming with them) and yours in some detail.

Penetrative sex (particularly anal) and needle sharing are still the most "efficent" person-to-person contact for HIV transmission, so safe-sex (condom AND lube), clean needles, and "good behaviour" remain the best ways to protect yourself.

deep kissing? maybe if u have cuts in your mouth like from braces or something and he has cuts in his mouth too.

Only if there is an open sore involved or you swallow some of the salava
