Is it a HIPAA violation to verify information with the Police regarding a patient/prisoner?

I verified information to a law enforcement official regarding an inmate that was still under arrest but was currently an inpatient. Part of the phone conversation was overheard by another employee who complained to the HIPAA compliance officer resulting in my termination from a position that I had held for 17 years.

SOUNDS LIKE LIKE THEY HAD IT IN FOR YOU I WOULD SEE AN ATTORNEY!!

It probably is but you can always review the HIPPA act to confirm. I deal in work comp and thank Heaven that HIPPA doesn't apply to the info I need cause it is a pain in the @ss.

i dont know your case. if the police officer had a valid reason, warrant, whatever to hear the information, then no it wasnt. but if he didnt have an official reason to know the prisoner's info then it was
