What HIPAA is, and how it impacts patient privacy. Is HIPAA an improvement, or a detriment, to health facility It stands for Health Insurance Portability & Privacy Act. I don't see it as a detriment, as it protects us from having our personal medical information released without our authorization. This site will give you more info. HIPPA is a patients rights to privacy. I work in a hospital and all in all I can understand why they have this privacy. It can be a pain though. Say your neighbor is in the hospital and you work there you can't according to HIPPA visit or acknowledge that they are there unless that patient tells you or you are told by a family member, church ect.. that they are there.Unless the patient knows this they may think you your not a very nice neighbor. Had this happen to me. But it also protects patient health information to be given to anybody that the patient doesn't want them to have. Or say someone calls and wants to know how the patient is.. unless you have a password that the family or patient has given to nursing this info can't be given out. |
