If i lost my job for violating hipaa, what else can happen?


looked up a patient's record and the patient found out, i was terminated. How far can the patient take it? I did not use the imformation at all, but the pt. assumes I did, which is why the allegations. how bad can the punishment be for jsut acessing the record (frequent times)

You can actually get fined anywhere between 500 dollars and 25,000 dollars depending on how far the patient wants to take it.

It sounds like you worked in an office that gave you access to looking up records, in which case - if it was part of your job to deal with that record, you didn't violate HIPAA.

I'm surprised you were fired if part of your job was dealing with records.

You might want to look into more of the reason behind the termination.

if you talked about this to anyone else then u r in violation of the law and can be sued civially by the patient
