Tell me something about HIPAA?

Tell me something about HIPAA?

HIPPA is a patient policy that protects the rights of patients information from being revealed or transmitted to third party participants. Only if the patient is in agreeance can any information be told, searched, or faxed. Even if a family member were to ask. Father, daughter etc, it doesn't matter.

it's a privacy act

Prevents dr's and hospitals from giving out personal information to other people unless specified by the patient.

it's a medical release form we used when i worked for a lwa office.

i cant its against HIPPA laws

New confidentiality laws that are very complex and deals with anone one or oganization in the mental health or health care field concerning patient's rights and confidentiality..........Hundreds of pages of provisions and rules.............

A lot of paperwork and non-sense that appears to protect the patient but somehow mistakes end up happening anyway and your medical information gets released anyway. HIPAA are the ones responsible for those 20 page forms they ask you to read and sign when you see a new doctor.

It's stupid. A waste of time. Did i mention stupid?
The HIPPA acts have more rules and regulations than anyone can possibly keep up with (doctors). Typical beurocracy. Doctors never had any reason before to sell or alter your personal records for profit...now there are laws against it...DUH!
Did i mention..stupid?

It's the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act. It prevents the release of Protected Health Information (PHI) unless permission is given by the patient or patient's representative for minors and those who are unable to make decisions regarding their health. Not all medical information falls under the category of PHI though. Some of your information is not protected. (Ex: information sent from your Dr. to your insurance company, information sent from a specialist to your primary care physician.) In these instances, it is understood that you are allowing release of the information for payment and continuation of care.

" Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 mandates significant changes in the legal and regulatory environments governing the provision of health benefits, the delivery and payment of healthcare services, and the security and confidentiality of individually identifiable, protected health information.

The law is composed of two major legislative actions: provisions for health insurance reform and requirements for administrative simplification. Complying with all aspects of HIPAA will require providers and virtually all entities within the healthcare industry (including clinical research) to make significant changes to their information systems, operations policies and procedures and business practices."

I had to make major adjustments to patient claim files at my job because of the HIPAA act. It's a privacy act so that patient information is protected. Files are encrypted, sent in different formats, we no longer can email patient information, etc..everything's done 'to code' now.
