Has a "doctors excuse" become pointless? |
I was thinking the other day, we arent allowed to give out ANY kind of patient info. We cant even tell if a patient is actually a patient at the practice, so what is the point of requesting a doctors excuse? If someone calls and asks if so and so had an appt there wouldnt it violate HIPAA rules to say yes? ok i must not have been clear in my question. I am a nurse so the question was coming from the other end. I was saying that if someone gets a doctors office, the school/employer couldnt call and verify it because we arent allowed to even say that the oatient was indeed at our practice. So arent we sort of going off of the honor system anyway? If the patient asks the doc for a note while in the doctor's office, it is not against HIPAA rules. The patient may show the note or not show the note as he chooses. dude idk...thats cofusing Well, no it is not pointless because if a place of employment requires a doctors excuse it is up the the patient to get that. If the patient requests it then it does not voilate HIPPA to write an excuse to give it to the patient. The patient can then figure if they want to give it to whoever. That's a really good point. I know at my school if you have to skip a couple of classes of gym due to an injury, you need a doctors note, but you have to go to your doctor and request one. That way, the doctor isn't breaking any rules. If the school called or if someone asked for files, etc. and the patient wasn't aware of this, then i guess that would violate the rules... It's a very confusing subject though. It's not really clear in that situation. It is required by employers if you miss more than one days work. You have to get it from your doctor.Your boss cant call your doctor to get it.Therefore no HIPPA is involved because you request the release. My doctor doesn't put down what is wrong only that I was under his care and required to stay in bed or whatever. |
