Getting HDL below 40?

Had open-heart surgery 2 months ago. 4 way bypass. Take a cholestrol pill daily with an asprin. My count went from pre-surgery 224/135 to a current level of 154/37. They want the HDL above 40. they suggest another pill called Niaspan. Too costly for me. Especially being so close to a goal of 40. I'm 67 years old and feel pretty darn good with the circumstance. My eating habits are quite good with some abuses.
Lots of grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts. Abuse is pizza, real eggs and potatoes, and "lite" cool whip with real jello's and angel food cake. Does anyone have a suggestion outside of a pill to go above 40? Will have another test in 6 weeks. I thank you for an astute answer.

My HDL is 37. My doctor wants 40 or above. How important is this with a number so close. I don't want to spend $80 on pills. have any suggestions beside red wine or sardines in my diet? I feel it's not necessary to take pills.

A glass of red wine daily at night is good for increasing HDL.

Walnuts and sardines are supposed to raise your good cholesterol.
