Besides exercise, how do you raise your HDL?

I've been exercising like a maniac and eating healthy foods for the past six months, and when they checked my cholesterol, the numbers were worse than the previous time a couple of years ago. What is distressing is that the HDL is low for a female (43), and every place I check to see how I can raise it suggests EXERCISE. I couldn't exercise any more than I do (6-9 hours a week, 6 days a week) and still be employed full time. What else works on the HDL?

I already eat quite a bit of fish, oatmeal, and olive oil, by the way.

Believe it or not alcohol in moderation also raises your good HDL

take b vitamin, Niaspan, also drink grape juice

Try whole grain cereals and breads

My HDL went from 34 to 73 in a year

eat fiber, drink juice, take b vitamin, and get rest

You need to consult a physician.
You may need to take a medication such as Lipitor - cholesterol-lowering medication. Some people are genetically predisposed to high cholesterol levels.
That being said, stick to your routine. If you are overweight, loosing weight will definitely help a lot and you might not need medications.

Even more than exercise and Olive Oil, which are VERY important, you should also avoid simple carbohydrates (white wheat products like cookies, cakes, pizza, pasta, and all sweets etc..). These are metabolized very fast and raise your insulin level sky high.

The insulin plays a very important, but complicated role in the cholesterol balance (HDL to LDL), which is the thing you should be looking, the ratio between them, not their absolute value, which can fluctuate a lot from person to person.
