Does niacin [niaspan ] 500mg help to raise hdl ?

my hdl level is 10 my md says he has never seen one so low

Niacin is one of the best medications we have to help increase the HDL's. Diet & Exercise are another great way to increase your HDL. As for Niacin, to avoid the flushing, pen stibbing type of side effect their are a number of things you can do to help decrease this problem.
1. Take a Aspirin about 30 min. before taking the niacin. It will help thin you blood just a bit and really helps with the flushing.
2. Start at a low dose like 250 mg and increse the dose slowly up to the target dose. The extended-release products help a little with this. (Do not break or cruch the extended-release tablets.) If you start low and increase slowly you will avoid a majority of your problems.
Their are other cholesteol medication that will help increase HDL but none work as well as niacin.
Again don't forget getting regular exercise also increase the HDL. here is a website that has a lot of good info:
