How to calculate total Cholesterol. Is there a formulae to calculate total Cholesterol from LDL and HDL? |
What if my HDL is very high (running 100Km a week) but LDL marginal, would the high HDL number drag the total cholesteral higher than guideline? The formula is from Friedewald. Total cholesterol minus (triglycerides divided by 5) = LDL. HDL has always been measured directly and as direct measurement of LDL has been widely available for more than 5 years I no longer use the Friedewald calculation. Indeed before I tell anyone that they have a lipid disorder I also measure the sub particle types of LDL and HDL. You are correct that elevating your HDL due to running will influence the calculated value of LDL but it will not influence the direct measurement of LDL. In addition sub particle type will determine if your HDL is HDL2 which is protective or HDL3 which is not. Guidelines are based upon your cardiovasular risk assessment and there are no 'normal' values or guidelines independent of such an assessment. |
