Severe gum disease... can your gums recede to the point the teeth can actually.....?

Can gum disease and buildup cause teeth to get so loose they actually fall out?
Wouldn't it be painful so the person knew it was happening?
Can this lead to buildup on the jawbone too?
If so how do they treat it?
Can the gums recede until it no longer covers the jawbone?
and what corrective actions can doctors do to repair it?

I know it's a lot in one scenario but I wanted to cover all the avenues I could think of for a really severe case.

Yes, severe periodontal disease can cause normally healthy teeth to fall out. I'm not sure about the gums receding to the point where you'd see the jawbone, but the bone itself may become damaged; the links below might provide you with some help in this area.

yes, it all happens, it even leads to heart disease with all the infection in the blood stream. Prevention is the only thing that can be done.

Yes..the treatment is called scaling where we removed the tartar and dental plaque which was the main culprit in causing the gum disease...nope it is not painful thats why people don't seek for treatment unless there is development of absces or sensitivity.

Yes I have a place in my mouth now that has a inch long area of jaw bone exposed. It doesn't hurt badly and my insurance does not cover dental. My teth have never been a problem but my gums have cause me to lose most of them. Plus I have a lung disease which means I take stroids a staroids a lot. Tat causes more bone problems. I'm not sure what a dentist can do other than to sand my jaw bone down so the gum can cover it.
