Today the dentist told me I have gum disease...please advise...?

They did an X-ray and said I had gum disease and to come back in 2 weeks - is there anything I can do in the meantime and is gum disease serious and if so is it curable? My teeth look OK to the naked eye. What will they do in 2 weeks?

i was told the same as you and like yourself my teeth looked fine.I bought a sonic electric toothbrush and after a few weeks my gums were fine and also floss and clean twice a day and use dental brushes to clean inbetween your teeth. It worked for me.

Hmm. if your teeth are OK it might not be so bad...didn't they give you any treatemtn or tell you how to care for it? Go to another Dentist for a second opinion I think is best

They'll scrape your gums and my mom says it really hurts, but you have to do it or you will eventually lose your teeth. The best thing to do to keep your gums healthy is to floss and massage them every day. It's important to keep them really clean.

Likely what you have is inflammed gums and some gum recession. Possibly also some pocket formation. This is really common. I had the same and I will relate what I do now. First the gums become inflammed due to food stuck between the tooth and the gum, regardless of brushing. So first floss every day without fail, your gums may bleed somewhat when you do this. Next get a good braun electric toothbrush, much better than manual and the sonicare ones suck big time. Next invest 50.00 in a new Waterpic dental appliance. I now do this daily sometimes more than once per. day. Wow what a difference in a couple of weeks my gums are 10 times better. First you will see all the gunk come out even after you brush, and it massages the gums until they are really stronger. Next get some ACT flouride rinse and do that daily. Do this entire program at night, and I will bet you will not need any expensive gum treatments. Heck it will only cost maybe 100.00 to start this, gum treatments I will bet are in the thousands. It works and I have lousy teeth.

Hi. I am a dental hygienist and father and both brothers dentists. Gum disease is prevalent for many reasons. Not caring for your teeth. Not flossing. Illness. Gum disease is a nice way of saying Trench Mouth..... you have deep pockets surrounding the teeth and they need to be scaled and you may need antibiotics. If you don't take care, you will lose your teeth. I also have periodontal disease..... but not the trench mouth as it is under control...... Until your appointment to feel better. Floss easily. Rinse with Warm to HOT salt water. .... a bit of peroxide and use Listerine...... This will help.... Salt Salt...... and continue with Dental Care..... sally

It is sort of curable, and is usually ongoing but will stop and stay at a certain place with no infection if you take necessary care.

You probably have perio breath. Which to most smells just like bad breath... to a professional it smells of infection. Make sure you have no illnesses like hepc hiv whatever, you can give it by kissing now with active infection and probably gums are bleeding...... Are gums puffy and red? I would like to see your xrays and know your history.... some dentists just want the money..... take care, sally

I am not sure if gum disease can be cured but there is a mouth wash you can use which will help and the dentist usually recommends it. The mouth wash is available at most chemists It is in a brown bottle and it begins with 'C' but I can't remember the name. I think it is clorozin something like that anyway.

I brought myself this Oral water jet system (Waterpic) as someone has already mentioned.
Its great!! i hate flossing as my gums bleed. and to be honest i don't think that's the healthiest ways as I'm sure that can cause damage too. This water jet is great! you fill it with water and place in mouth and move around teeth, it jet washes all the food trapped in teeth which you can't see. you can buy them from Argos in the UK.

depends how bad it is,dont want to worry you but I had this when I was 18 and had to have all my teeth out and false ones in,(which I will never regret as I can eat anything and never get toothache or need to go to dentist anymore!!)but my teeth were crumbling away,if yours are not there is a chance they can save them....good luck xx

If they told you that you have gum disease this means that basically you've had enough plaque and tartar buildup (yes, this can happen below your gums too, not necessarily obvious) that it's started to affect the bone around your teeth. If you don't treat gum disease it WILL cause you to lose bone structure and eventually your teeth can fall out. But it is treatable especially if they've caught it early.

Your say your teeth look OK but look at your gums--they might look kind of puffy and red. If you're a smoker, it's actually harder to tell with the naked eye--tobacco can cause gum disease and makes gum disease harder to fix but it also keeps the tissue in your mouth from showing any swelling (smoking makes it harder to fix gum disease too!). If you've noticed your gums bleeding when you brush or floss, this can be the first sign.

What I would recommend is to keep brushing and flossing regularly and use a rinse like Listerine to keep bacteria to a minimum. In 2 weeks they might check to see if your gums are looking better or they might actually work on scraping away bacteria from underneath your gums--but it's OK to call them and ask what to expect!

Gum disease describes are as follows---swelling, soreness,or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth.
There are 2 types of Gum disease--Gingivitis and Periodontal.

Sorry to hear that the dentist says you a have gum disease, but do not despair, it can be cured!!. I would suggest that you buy a product called CORSODYL mint mouth wash & CORSODYL Dental Gel, which is specifically used for treating gum problems, for treating and preventing GINGIVITIS (gum disease). so continue to use after treatment by your dentist. This was recomended to me from my Dentist. You can purchase these from Superdrug or Boots. or from

www.dentalhealth.org 0845 00 66 296. .
this company also stock a toothpick/flossing like product, called interdental, they come in a range of sizes and colours, choose the orange 0.45mm size to start with, if you find you have larger gaps between your teeth go up a size.

xx

I had gum disease a few years ago and had to have some of the gum cut away, it was so bad. I have also lost some teeth as a result of my own neglect. You can cure gum disease if it has only just been diagnosed. You need to regularly remove plaque from between the teeth with small inter dental brushes. This needs to be done once a day. Your dentist will tell you this in two weeks time. Also you may need to have treatment with the dental hygienist. This is very effective and gives you a good start for your own cleaning regime. You will avoid a lot of unnecessary pain and treatment if you follow your dentist' s instructions. Hopefully you should not need any major treatment.

Make sure you go back, they will probably do a deep cleaning and then put you on a 3 month recall. Do it. You could lose your teeth if you don't. Also, the bacteria from gum disease can cause heart problems. And as far as it hurting, it doesn't, it's just like a regular cleaning but they go a little more under the gums. If you're uncomfortable after your appointment, take tylenol or advil.

The best thing you can do between now and your next visit is to keep the teeth and gums as clean as you possibly can.
If the gum's are sore, which im sure they will be, invest in a soft headed toothbrush and brush gently twice a day, also try flossing, this will help remove any food/debris which like to gather in between the teeth, use a fine floss like Colgate satin floss, it's finer than normal floss and wont irritate the gums.
Once you have brushed/flossed rinse out with a mouthwash especially designed for gum disease, Corsodyl is highly reccomended for this complaint, it does taste bitter but dont be tempted to water it down and when you have finished the bottle return to your normal mouthwash.
Disclosing tablets may also be a good idea, these are the little tablets that stain your teeth/gums and highlight the area's you miss whilst brushing.
If left undetected gum disease can lead to the loss of teeth,
the earliset stage of gum disease is local Gingivitis, many people will often complain of bleeding gums when brushing or their gums feel tender, this happens when the formation of plaque builds up on the gum margin, if it's not removed food debris and saliva will feed upon the plaque and soon it will turn into tartar or by it's correct name Calculus, and cause inflammation of the gums.
If gum disease is not caught and treated early enough it can cause Chronic Periodontis and this is where you will have bone loss, the germs and bacteria in the plaque will start to saok through the gingival crevice and will slowly destroy the Periodontal Ligament(this is the socket in which the tooth sits)
once this happens bone loss will occur and the teeth will become mobile.
Many factors can contribute to gum disease, past and present illness, pregnancy, smoking and medication can all play a part.
people who suffer with Diabetes, leukemia blood disorders and vitamin defciencies are also very prone to this condition.
Hope this has been of some help.

Maybe the gum problem your dentist reffered to was some kind of bacteria in the roots of your gums. That once happened to my friend too. The dentist spotted bacteria in the roots of her gums, since my friend loves salty food. The salt produced a hole in her tooth, and bacteria started infesting her gums. what happened is she had root canal. maybe, you'd need a root canal too. Ask your dentist about it. Root Canal's a pretty painful procedure, but it effectively removes the bacteria before it spreads on to the other roots of your teeth.

Try a mouth wash called "corsodyl from good supermarket or chemist. Also if you go into boots they sell tiny little toothbrush/toothpicks normally pink in colour but use mouth wash floss and use these tiny toothpick brushes for the two weeks and u shud b on road to recovery. Maybe en=ven go to another dentist for second opinion.
I had same problem few months ago and visit to hygienist and using all above i am cured and have such lovely teeth and my mouth feels 100% different. Try it !

GUM DISEASE

While gum disease can be attributable to many things such as diabetes, stress, and medications, the fact is that the majority of Americans who are afflicted with gum disease have nothing more to blame than a combination of poor dental hygiene, poor nutrition, and tobacco use (if you are a smoker). Gum disease is no laughing matter folks. It is a very serious and unnecessary risk to your health, not to mention your smile and ability to chew solid food into your twilight years.

The early stage of gum disease is gingivitis, where the gums redden, swell, and bleed easily, yet can be reversed with professional cleanings and proper dental hygiene. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis is much more of a threat, and with time, plaque can spread below the gum line, creating a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and toxins. These toxins produce a chronic inflammatory response that cause the tissue and bone that support the teeth to be broken down and destroyed. Gums will separate from the teeth, forming pockets which can become infected by the already present bacteria. Ultimately, if no action has been taken, the resulting bone loss and infection will call for the tooth to be removed in the afflicted area.

Sadly, gums cannot regenerate themselves, and the bones that hold your beautiful teeth in place will not reform. But, if caught soon enough (before your teeth fall out of your head), gum disease can be stopped dead in its tracks, pockets will close up, gums will become toned and healthy, and the former threat of bone loss will no longer exist.

Some gum disease is curable by brushing your teeth after maybe every meal. I use a soft brush and a moderate brush and tooth picks for variety. Avoid often eating sweets biscuits jam honey and any other form of simple sugar.

Even if your gums bleed a little while brushing your teeth may not be bad. Source - my dentist.

I cannot say what they will do in 2 weeks time.
