Guillain-Barr茅 syndrome is a nerve disorder. It is an acute and rapidly progressive inflammation of nerves that causes loss of sensation and muscle weakness.

This syndrome causes the destruction, removal, or loss of the myelin sheath of a nerve. Myelin is the substance of the cell membrane that coils to form the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath serves as an electrical insulator to nerve fibers.

It is also known as a polyneuropathy, which is a disease that involves several nerves.

Outlook

About 85% of people with Guillain-Barr茅 syndrome will make a complete recovery. Symptoms will gradually improve over several months.

* Any lasting problems may be addressed through additional physical therapy. Some people might need orthopedic devices to assist with activities of daily living.

* About 10% of people are at risk for relapsing. They will develop chronic neuropathy (nerve problems). For these people, drugs that suppress the immune system and plasmapheresis may be helpful.

Guillain-Barr茅 syndrome (GBS) (in French pronounced [伞il蓻虄 ba藞蕘e][1], in English pronounced /藞gi藧l忙n 藞b蓱藧re瑟/[2], /gi藧藞忙n b蓹藞re瑟/,[3] etc.[4]) is an acute, autoimmune, polyradiculoneuropathy affecting the peripheral nervous system, usually triggered by an acute infectious process. It is included in the wider group of peripheral neuropathies. There are several types of GBS, but unless otherwise stated, GBS refers to the most common form, acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP). It is frequently severe and usually exhibits as an ascending paralysis noted by weakness in the legs that spreads to the upper limbs and the face along with complete loss of deep tendon reflexes. With prompt treatment of plasmapheresis followed by immunoglobulins and supportive care, the majority of patients will regain full functional capacity. However, death may occur if severe pulmonary complications and dysautonomia are present.

HOPE THIS HELPS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION..........................

This can be scary, and even though there is no cure, there is treatment that helps a lot. Please go here and read this site:

Guillain-Barr茅 syndrome is an acute, usually rapidly progressive inflammatory polyneuropathy characterized by muscular weakness and mild distal sensory loss. Cause is thought to be autoimmune. Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment includes plasmapheresis, 纬-globulin, and, for severe cases, mechanical ventilation.

My mother had it when she was in her lat 60's. It basically made her a quadraplegic for a few months. Symptoms started in Nov. and by Christmas she couldn't move at all. She slowly returned to normal which was around June. Fine motor skills were slightly affected permanently.

My neice also had it when she was 16. It affected her extremities and her face to the point that she couldn't talk or swallow and had difficulty breathing. She ended up in ICU for a couple of weeks. She recovered much quicker than my mom.

Andy Griffith had the disease before he filmed the "Matlock" series.
