I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and given radioactive iodine to kill my thyroid.?

I am on levoxyl now but wonder if i still have graves disease. is this something that you have for the rest of your life or did it go away when i had my thyroid killed?

Grave's disease is an autoimmune disease. It is defined by the presence of antibodies attacking the body, not by hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is only one symptom of Grave's disease. You have only alleviated that one symptom, and replaced it with another (hypOthyroidism.)

So you still have Grave's disease, and you will likely have it the rest of your life, due to having the RAI. If you hadn't had RAI, you would have a good chance that you would have had a remission of the Grave's disease at some point, but that's unlikely now.

Watch your eyes very carefully, and get to the doctor at the first sign of trouble. Once you have RAI, Grave's disease tends to attack the eyes.

Keep up with your blood tests. Every six weeks until you are totally stable and symptom free. Then at least every six months for the rest of your life.

My mother had hyperthyroidism and after the treatment her condition was completely cured I am not sure about Graves Disease but I am fairly certain you have been cured

if you have had your thyroid irradicated then you should not suffer from overacctive thyroid disease but you will have to remain on thyroid medication such as the one you are currently on

In Graves disease your immune system attacks your thyroid, so with your thyroid gland gone, you can no longer have Grave's, but you could still end up with other immune complications.

you should search for graves disease on yahoo, google
or try www.webmd.com

" Graves' disease, an autoimmune disease characterized by antibodies against the thyrotropin (TSH) receptor (also called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins), is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism"
"Hyperthyroidism is the most common feature of Graves' disease, affecting nearly all patients, and is caused by autoantibodies to the thyrotropin (TSH) receptor (TSHR-Ab) that activate the receptor, thereby stimulating thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion as well as thyroid growth (causing a diffuse goiter). "

Once you get rid of the thyroid there is no more production of thyroid hormone and technnically you are cured. The problem is that you need a certain amount in order to live. That is why you need to take the synthetic hormone. You will have to be on it for the rest of your life and be monitored regularly to make sure you are taking the right amount. Please make sure that if you become pregnant you tell your Ob/Gyn about your condition. your dose will need to be adusted during pregnancy.
Good luck.
