John Johnson's site focuses on nutritional solutions to hyperthyroidism, and how to avoid RAI and anti-thyroid drugs when possible. I have Hashimoto's Syndrome (a type of hyperthyroidism) and a multi nodular goitre. My TSH levels were slightly elevated and made me lose 6kg in a few days. I didn't really complain about this but I did know it wasn't normal so I had an ultrasound of my throat and a nuclear medical scan. My levels were not high enough to require medication but I do need to be careful that my goitre doesn't get any bigger as it can be painful to swallow if it does. My ENT specialist made me tilt my head back and swallow.
Graves Disease is an association of hyperthyroidism/goitre and exophthalmos, with an accelerated pulse rate, profuse sweating, nervous symptoms, psychic disturbances, emaciation and elevated basal metabolism. Like with most medications it would be unwise to drink too excessively. Ask your doctor for a more detailed diet regime that you could follow. Sorry to hear you reqired hospitalizaiton. While I was diagnosed of hypOthyroidism, it is similar in nature to hypErthyroidism in that both are metabolic, hormonal related disorders.
My concern for you is the medication you are on. After being on Synthroid for countless years, the dose had to be increased regularly, I did what most of us do, not research the medicine properly.
I have been off all meds for about 10 years now and have a clean bill of health. I would highly recommend that you search out the Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet on Evothyroxine. The MSDS may not be easy to access, but it is available and will be worth every moment.
In the meantime, what you can do to help yourself is start with a positive attitude, and move forward from there...
I did increase my intake of iodine, as should you, with seaweed (nori), sea vegetables, and seafood. (A good health food store is a great resource)
I also increased my water intake to a minimum of 10 glasses a day, kicked up the Vitamins A, C, E, niacin and zinc. I was also gifted with a Dad able to use shiatsu healing massage, acupuncture may be an alternative.
If Rx meds are your only alternative, do your best to help your self with diet and keep a positive outlook--it can make a tremendous difference.
Avoid peanuts, cabbage, soybeans and mustard--all foods that inhibit the body's use of iodine.
