My husband was recently diagnosed with Graves disease....is it possibly for him to put his weight back on??

My husband was diagnosed with Graves disease and is so weak and thin...he is now on medication but is worried he will never put on th 60 lbs he lost....any suggestions on how to put it back on?

I was diagnosed with Graves in August. It took me until now (November) to get the weight back on. Don麓t worry, the medication will take a while but eventually he will be better again. I did.

About the food: I avoid iodine, the highest content is in milk and other dairy products (the kettle is fed with iodine). However dairy products like yogurt, cheese and butter from these countries is ok. since they do not feed with iodine: France, Ireland, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands.

Eggs can also have a lot of iodide.

Bread can contain a lot of iodine, one slice can contain more than one daily dose (up to 180 mcg per slice and the recommended daily dose is 75-150 mcg). I would watch out for anything saying "iodide" in the ingredient list, like potassium iodide.

There is good information on Graves and iodine in this article:

Food like cauliflower, brussels sprouts, red and white cabbage, brookoli reduce the ability of the body to use the iodine in the food and therefore are good for people with an overfunction (not for people with an underfunction like Hashimoto).

Good article on this:

I lost only 20 pounds but I regained 10 so far (I was a size 12 to 14 before, then a size 6 and now between 8 and 10).

Your husband will get better!!!

maybe

I'm sorry but I don't have any suggestions as to how your husband could put the weight back on, but I can suggest this. Try looking on the internet for forums and other online communities that are for Graves Disease and talk to other users on the forums and ask them how he can put the weight on. Also, look on health web sites for information about the disease. Perhaps they will be useful and will give you some information as to how your husband can gain the weight. I hope my suggestion helps some.

I had a friend with Graves disease and he was thin but not extremely so but his disease was pretty well controlled with drugs.

The diet for hyperthyroidism should consist of high calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals. The diet should consist of eggs, meat, poultry and cereal. Minerals and vitamins like A, B complex, C, calcium and phosphorous should be increased to twice the daily requirements.

Foods rich in these vitamins and minerals are yellow fruits like papaya, mango, milk and milk products, green leafy vegetables, sprouted pulses and fish. A person suffering from hyperthyroidism should limit smoking, alcohol, chocolate and high-caffeine beverages such as tea, coffee and cola.

He needs to follow a low iodine diet. Iodine increases the function of the thyroid. Foods that contain iodine such as kelp, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas should be avoided. There are a few websites out there that will tell you what foods to avoid. Other than that he could eat a well balance diet high in calories.

Also don't eat goitrogenic foods such as rapeseed, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, maize, lima beans, soya and pearl millet should be limited. These foods contain natural goitrogens, which are chemicals that cause the enlargement of the thyroid gland by interfering with thyroid hormone synthesis. Cooking is known to make the goitrogens elements less effective but it would be wise not eat these foods raw.
