Is hyperthyroidism The same as graves disease? |
I have been told I have hyperthyroidism but they have also mentioned graves disease. When I try and get information on these they tell me two different things to eat. What makes the difference? Hyperthyroidism is any condition that results in too much thyroid hormone being produced by the thyroid gland. Grave's disease is one cause of this condition where the entire gland becomes "overactive" and produces too much thyroid hormone. There are other conditions that cause hyperthyroidism, but the mechnism and nature of these conditions are different from Grave's disease. Tumors of the thyroid, and sometimes an inflammation of the thyroid can also cause hyperthyroidism. Your doctor can do tests to determine the cause. So in short, Grave's disease is not synonymous with hyperthyroidism, but it is one cause of it. Hyperthyroidism/Graves' Disease Well I have hypertyroidism/graves disease. And what I learned was that it can be brought on by major trauma in your life, in my case I believe it came when my son almost was killed 9 years ago, he is ok. If you are not seeing a Endocrinologist it would be a very good thing to do. When they found my condition, the first doctor treated it with the incorrect medicine (synthroid) and actually increased my thyroid production which could have led to heart failure from what I was told. Hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease also causes infertility and other health issues so i would take this very serious and ask alot of questions. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but if you are anywhere near Pensacola, Florida there is a wonderful Doctor there by the name of Dr. Mamish. I have attached his website, and if nothing else you can contact them and maybe his office can refer you to a specialist in your area. I was put on Tapazole and told my infertility problems would be over in 3 to 6 months, to my surprise it took 2 weeks and I was pregnant, but other health issues prevailed and I miscarried. But on the up side, after being on this medication for the short 2 months all my T-levels are normal again and I am off the medicine and have been for 2 years now not to mention I also gained 30 lbs which I needed badly, I only weighed 89 lbs and now I weigh 119 and feel great. I wish you the best and if I can help or share any more of my information with you, feel free to email me! Hope this helps! Also just to let you know President Bush (Senior) has Graves Disease and so does his dog. haha I guess the President has alot of stresses also... |
