My son has Graves Disease and says he will have some type of iodone treatment when his levels are down. What?

should he expect during this. Will he miss work? Wil he need someone with him.? He is 33. He was just told today so they havent said more, He wants to be prepared.

Graves Disease is hyperthyroidism, an autoimmune disease that causes excessive thyroid hormone or thyroxine.
The thyroid is in charge of metabolism.
He will receive radioactive iodine which will kill some of the excessive thyroid hormone cells in his thyroid, If he gets a lot of iodine his thyroid cells might shrink & he may need to take some thyroid hormone.

He shouldn't miss work or need someone to be with him.

He should call his MD to ask these questions so he will feel less anxious & more prepared.

Good luck to your son.

He will not only have to miss work, he won't be allowed any human contact for a week or so. He will be radioactive during this time. The "iodine treatment" is radioactive iodine ablation. The iodine is used as a carrier to get radioactive waste into the thyroid. Once in the thyroid, the radioactive waste will burn up the thyroid. He will have next to no thyroid function left after this "treatment". He will also still have Grave's disease. He will just have yet one more disease to deal with on top of the Grave's disease - hypOthyroidism. He will have to be on medication for the rest of his life to battle the hypothyroidism, because the body can not live without thyroid hormones.
