Wot is Graves Disease??? Is it life threatening?? Is it cure able???

Graves disease is when your thyriod is producing an excessive amount of hormones and yes it can be cured.. one common treatment is to give you radioactive iodine in pill form and it burns your thyroid over a period of several weeks you will have your blood taken several times to monitor your hormone level then after the thyriod burns out he will start you on a medication to level your hormones out, it might take a while to get the dose correct and you will feel terrible for a while but after they get you on a even level you will feel 100% better and usually lose weight that you gain after the iodine was given...this disease is very curable... i wish you all the luck and i hope you feel better soon, if you have more question just e-mail me and i'll try to help as much as i can...take care

its a malfunction of the thyroid, and yes its treatable, im not sure if its life threatening if not treated but its possible. just put it in a web search and find out, its what mrs bush senior has.

Grave`s disease or Macedo`s disease is the name of EXOPHTHALMIC GOITER. It is hyperthyroidism occurring mostly in females between 25 to 40. The thyroid is uniformly enlarged and secretes more thyroxine. The individuals develop all classical symptoms of thyrotoxicosis. Rapid heart beat with arrhythmias,increased blood pressure ,increased blood glucose,inability to tolerate warm surroundings,mild tremor of extremities etc. T3 and T4 are increased. Eye balls protrude out and many occular complications occur. Ironically treatment may aggravate eye protrusion. Neomercazole,Lugol`s iodine,and Adrenergic blockers are the drugs of choice. Radio active iodine I 131 and surgery are curative.

My mom has Graves disease. She was diagnosed about 4 yrs. ago. It can be life threatening if it goes undiagnosed, can cause heart attacks. She had to have radiation to "kill" her thyroid, and now takes medication that acts as a synthetic thyroid. She also went to a holistic doctor and now eats a very limited, very healthy diet. She is doing very well. It isn't technically curable, but it isn't a death sentence unless it is untreated.
