What is Graves鈥?disease?
Graves' Disease is a type of autoimmune disease that causes over-activity of the thyroid gland, causing hyperthyroidism. This over-activity is also sometimes called "toxic diffuse goiter." The thyroid gland helps set the rate of metabolism, which is the rate at which the body uses energy. When the thyroid is too active, it makes more thyroid hormones than the body needs. High levels of thyroid hormones can cause side effects such as weight loss, rapid heart rate and nervousness. This is an uncommon disease that affects 2 percent of all women at some time in their lives. Graves鈥?Disease also tends to affect women between the ages of 20 and 40, although it occurs in infants, children, and the elderly.

I have it and I have yet to find a true answer. I know it is theimmune system attacking the body and it has to do with the T3 and T4 cells and all of that. Frankly, they are not sure what causes it. Hyperthyroidism seems to be the most major effect of Graves disease, along with eye problems. But it is my understanding that alot of times that those who have Graves Disease - it can go into remission I guess you could say. It can be controlled w/ medicine. I take PTU and feel much better since the meds have kicked in.

well.......this is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, meaning, overactive thyroid.it is autoimmune w/no known cause..antibodies produced by body stimulate and attack the gland and the eye muscles and the skin on lower legs.....weakness,rapid heart, low libido, bulging eyes, weight loss, anxiety are all symptoms....good luck....

Ive got graves disease and i am taking carbibazole. It took a while to get the dose right but now i seem to be ok but have to have a blood test every 6 months. I really did have nervousness and heart palpatations before i was diagnosed and didnt know what it was. I must have had it for a long time and didnt go to the doctors and when i did, he said it was anxiety, i went back a few times as i still didnt feel well and saw another Doctor and he took blood tests and thats how it was diagnosed
