Can one have both gout and rheumatoid arthritis?

my blood work indicates i could have lupus and rheumatoid, I definately have gout but take meds for it. I am going to a rhematolgist what aggressive questions should i ask ? From what I can gather on the net its damn near impossible to have gout and rheumatoid.

I don't see why you can't have both. Gout has to do with your body producing too much uric acid and is treated via diet and meds. RA is easily diagnosed w/a blood test. There are treatments for it but long range it is a degenerative autoimmune disease. I would ask the MD about what form of RA u have and what u can expect over the next year(s). I would also ask him about physical therapy and alternative therapy like massage and accupuncture aside from the meds he will probably prescribe. Be sure he knows about all the meds u are taking and how they interact w/ea other. I would also read about about each disease before u go to your next appt. so that u can ask questions u've come up with. Also take someone to the appt w/you so they can also hear what he says and take notes. You might get information overload! Best of luck.

Not true. It is entirely possible to have both Gout and Rheumatoid. Both are a form of arthritis and it is possible to have more than one kind of arthritis. Gout is due to a high level of uric (I believe that is the correct term) acid in your blood. Are you on Allopurinol? That is the medicine that is normally used to treat Gout. You also have to be careful because people with Gout can have a tendency for kidney stones. Rheumatoid or Lupus affects your system in another way. It not only affects the muscles and joints, but can affect the heart and other internal organs as well. Your doctor wil be able to tell you more. Ask him what the rheumatoid seems to be affecting, if you have it, and if you need to watch your diet as far as the Gout - you shouldn't eat fatty foods or drink. He can give you more a guideline when you go.

Gout is a metabolic form of arthritis which comes from too much protein in the diet preferably for those who eat a lot of red meat and don't rotate between fish chicken turkey. Rheumatoid is an autoimmune form of arthritis which comes on as you get older, but you will have childhood onset of arthritis and both Gout and Rheumatoid develop over years. If you have arthritis you might be prescribed a drug called Humera which is a drug given introveineously every 2 weeks which is to help lower the inflammation brought on by arthritis. You can actually correct the problem by taking in lots of glucosamine and changing your diet and limiting your intake of red meat and sticking to a diet of lean meat. If you need to find out hollistic means to deal with your problem you can go to this website and email the nurse who runs it about what you can do to deal with your issue.
