Good Luck.I'm only just sleeping with a sheet over my foot so I know what you're going through. Let me know how you get on.

Cherries! My dad suffers with gout quite regularly and nothing he tries works except for eating loads of cherries. Be warned if you try this - when doing "ablutions" they can look a little alarming!

Ibruprofen pain killers is what a Gp would prescribe but they can also be bought in small quantities at a chemist.

Better still have a chat with the chemist they may be able to come up with some pain relieving gels.

Nothing over the counter works. It's off to the doctor for an injection in the bum I'm afraid.

I've heard cranberry juice and pomegranate juice help ease the pain.

Home remedies which can alleviate the symptoms of acute gout include resting and elevating the inflamed joint. Ice pack applications can be helpful to reduce pain and decrease inflammation. Patients should avoid aspirin containing medications because aspirin prevents kidney excretion of uric acid.

Acetaminophen ( brand name-Tylenol) or other analgesic painkillers - for pain.
NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), more specifically indomethacin (brand name-Indocin) - for inflammation.
Colchicine - prevents or relieves gout attacks by reducing inflammation.
Corticosteroids - for anti-inflammatory response.
Probenecid (brand names - Benemid, Probalan) and Sulfinpyrazone (brand name - Anturane) - to decrease uric acid blood levels by increasing the excretion of uric acid into the urine.
ColBenemid (other brand names are Col-Probenecid and Proben-C) - contains Probenecid, a uricosuric agent, and Colchicine, has anti-gout properties.
Allopurinol (brand name - Zyloprim) - to lower blood uric acid by preventing uric acid production. Allopurinol blocks the conversion of purine in foods to uric acid.
Losartan (brand names - Cozaar and Hyzaar) - not specifically a gout medication but is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, antihypertensive drug that may help control uric acid levels.
Fenofibrate (brand name - Tricor) - not a specific gout medication but it a lipid-lowering drug that may help uric acid levels.

Best to go to you docs and get them to prescirbe something called allopurinol.

Ibuprofen full-dose during times of symptoms best option
Probably best to avoid gels as agonisingly painful to apply and not as effective as oral pain-killers/anti-inflammatories
I take it you know the way to reduce liklihood of future attacks: good fluid intake, very little alcohol, avoid purine rich foods {i.e. herrings, musssles, yeast, sardines + many more}
also avoidance of stress.....easier said than done however

Any anti-inflammatory will reduce the symptoms, there are only 2 of these available over the counter, ibuprofen, which is probably not potent enough, and aspirin where the risk benefit ratio may make its use to potentially dangerous due to the gastro-intestinal bleeding risk.

Better to see your GP and get something like naproxen or diclofenac. If you are getting recurrent attacks then a prophylactic might be an answer for the future, allopurinol is the best.
