Do I have gout?

have pain in my toe walking on it hurts and its throbbing as i'm sat with it elevated .. me dad whos 74 said its gout .. wot is it and how u get rid of it ..

Have your Uric Acid levels checkd in your blood when you think you have gout. Red meats , sea food and alcohol could set it off. Especially if you sleep with your feet exposed. Usually starts in your big toe.
The pain is uric acid crystals in the joints. I try to drink a tonne of water and keep the foot in very hot water. Current drugs have too many side effects. Just watch your intake on red meats and alcohol and sea food.

go to the dr

Gout is a build up of Uric Acid that forms crystals, usually in the big toe. It is very painful but not too serious condition. It is usually related to kidney disfunction often associated with drinking too much alcohol. My friend has it and I think he is on some type of medication for it.

Gout is a buildup of acid in your bloodstream often due to diet. Lay off processed meats, elevate it, and if it doesn't get better, you may have a stress fracture or an ingrown nail.

Go to the doctor for medication, and follow his lifestyle recommendations exactly. I used to work with a woman who had gout. She was relieved by putting her feet up all the time. She stayed off her feet, and had them up as often as possible. However, she was homebound. She couldn't exercise. That could be your life saver.

I thought you said GOAT!

Yes, go to the doctor

They have pills for gout but also cherry juice helps alot. Or eat cherries. My husband and son get it all the time. You just have to figure out what you are eating or drinking that causes it.

Gout does commonly (but not only) occur in the big toe. It usually comes on fairly quickly (often repeatedly) and causes the toe to be not only painful, but also swollen and red. It would certainly be worth seeing a doctor as there is treatment possible both in the acute stage and (if necessary) to reduce the chance of it happening again.

Gout is caused by little crystals forming in the joint which then leads to inflammation

I wouldn't take advice about any drugs over the internet though - all drugs have side effects and you'd be much better having that conversation with a doctor.

your best option is to go see the doctor and get a proper diagnosis

you need medication go to the doctors he will tell you what to do it can get pretty bad so don't put it off good luck

My dad has gout. I make him drink horse radish root steeped in water for 5 mins in the morning before he has anything else to drink or eat. Then I give him loads of cherry juice or berry juice, this breaks down the uric acid. Cherries are the best natural cure.

It sounds very likely if the pain is coming from the joint of the big toe. There is one other condition that can mimic gout, however.

Excessive build up of uric acid in the body can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the body, mainly in the joint of the big toe, but can also form in other parts of the body including soft tissue.

A visit to the doctor is recommended to have uric acid level measured. Dependent upon results, severity and frequency of attacks, will determine treatment. Allopurinol is often prescribed on a permenant basis or the attack may be considered mild with the expectation that it will clear up, with hopefully no repeat attack.

Periods of severe stress can trigger Gout attacks, because the bodies normal functioning is interferred with. Poor kidney function is often associated with uric acid build up, and kidney damage can occur if uric acid build up is not alleviated.

Certain foods and alcohol can exacerbate an attack but is unlikely to be the root cause. You also need to look at your general lifestyle, are you overweight, stressed, lack of sleep, no excercise, are you stressing yourself with too much exercise, lifting heavy weights etc. Also the older you get the more likely an attack. It almost always attacks men and occasionally post menopausal women.

The severity of an attack can probably measured by the degree of pain, which can be excruciating making it impossible to walk, and can lead to deformation of the foot.
