A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland, which can be diffuse or nodular. The different causes of a goiter include iodine deficiency (the main one), autoimmune thyroiditis, exposure to radiation, infectious agents, or thyroid malignancy. You want to make sure that your salt is iodized and take supplements that include iodine. Foods that you want to avoid are those that contain cyanoglucosides, including cassava, lima beans, maize, bamboo shoots, and sweet potatoes.
