What are the do and don'ts for toxic goiter?

Toxic goiter is also known as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid enlarges and produces too much T4 hormone.

Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are nervousness, irritability, increased perspiration, heart racing, hand tremors, anxiety, insomnia, thinning of your skin, fine brittle hair, and muscular weakness. In some people, the eyes may look enlarged because the upper eyelids are elevated.

The most common treatment for this disorder is I-131 radiation therapy and/or surgery to remove the thyroid. Without these measures, the thyroid will continue to produce too much hormone and the patient continues to experience symptoms. Long term effects of uncontrolled hyperthyroidism include osteoporosis, heart disease, and other problems.

I-131 radiation therapy actually destroys the thyroid so that it no longer produces thyroid hormone. Unfortunately, the patient must then take thyroid hormone supplements for the remainder of his/her life. The same situation applies when a thyroidectomy is performed to remove the thyroid.

The risks of living with excess thyroid hormone are great. If you have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, toxic goiter, or Grave's disease, please do not ignore treatment options!
