Glaucoma...lowering my risk?

My Dad has just been diagnosed with glaucoma so myself and my sister are now more at risk because of family history. Obviously we will get regular eye tests, but is there anything else we can do to lower our chances of developing the disease?

Marijuana does actually help with glaucoma, but apparently there are better drugs that can ameliorate your risk.

Regular, complete, dilated eye exams are your best bet. They should include visual field exams, and optic nervehead exams.

I have glaucoma, but none of my family did that I know of. I'm not sure that you can do anything to prevent it. Just keep generally healthy is probably as good as you can do. I use daily eye drops which keep the pressure down and don't have any problems, it is something which can be kept under control as long as the Doc knows about it.

i have extremely horridious eye site. one way you can prevent it is by not bein' seated closly 2 a television. about 4 feet away sould be most signficant.

Diabetics are more at risk of Glaucoma and the recommended course of action is to not eat too many calorific or sugary sweets and to have regular eye tests

From my experience I know that you can't do anything until you will start to have the specific simptoms... Then you will g at your doctor and he will prescribe you some medicaments... But... I am not a doctor so i can't be 100% sure about my answer... Ask a doctor... My grandfather have glaucoma and he was operate and how he can see only with one eye :( ...

smoke Marijuana, if it was legal it would be prescribed to your dad to treat it, but since it is a horrible drug (according to congress and those who believe everything the goverment tells them) its healing properties cannot be used to help.

Conventional medicine does not offer preventative treatment for Glaucoma, other than eye tests spotting it and allowing drops or surgery to take place before permanent damage occurs. Diagnosis is also only effective for Open Angle Glaucoma in 50% of cases [3]

It is related to an imbalance in the pressure behind the eyes. Therefore making sure you drink plenty of water, to allow your body to expel any excess of chemicals, would help (also having many other benefits too - most people drink nowhere near the recommended 1 litre a day of plain water!). [1]

Other things to lower blood pressure (see ref. [2] - also has scientific explanation of glaucoma) "reduce salt intake which also includes sodas and canned foods and many other commercially prepared foods sold in the supermarket. If you need to lose weight, exercise actually releases stress and thus lowers the blood pressure. Reduce the stress levels in your life (see color meditation). Stop coffee or alcohol."

One doctor also warns "Unfortunately, all of our information regarding the
potential role of supplements and alternative therapy for glaucoma still
relies on inferential analysis rather than controlled studies, and there
is even very little of that. .. Nothing at this point in alternative medicine has been shown to achieve a practical and sustained lowering of IOP except marijuana and, since that is at least technically considered not to be freely available, I won't cover it here." [4] "Though studies are continuing into Ginkgo biloba... Numerous studies have indicated that GBE protects against free radical damage and lipid peroxidation. Its antioxidant potential is equivalent to those of ascorbate, vitamin E, and glutathione" He goes on to mention studies taking place into Ginseng, sage, hawthorn, angelica, myrtille (bilberry), red wine, green tea and vitamin E.
