Eye test for glaucoma?

I had an eye test yesterday at the opticians - he made a very thorough examination of my eye & looked inside the eye for ages with the light etc. I realised though that I have never had a test for glaucoma, even though it runs in my grandmother's side of the family. Would he have spotted something amiss while looking to make him do the test, or can't you see the signs from a normal examination.

There is no single eye test for glaucoma. Diagnosis is made primarily by examination of the optic nerve head which is what he did when looking inside the eye. Had the nerve not looked healthy further testing including a field test would have been done. Measuring the pressure inside the eye is also part of testing for glaucoma but is not as useful as looking at the nerve.

Family history is a minor risk for glaucoma, especially if the family member is as remote as a grandparent.

They can test the pressure behind the eye ball with the laser light the use, if he thought there was more pressure than necessary or if your optic nerve was enlarged he would have sent you for a glaucoma test.

He would have looked out for it during the test. If you know Glaucoma is in the family, you should be able to get the test for free.

After the age of about 30 I'm pretty sure tests for Glaucoma are free if it is hereditory.

Do not worry. They measure eye pressure during the examination (they use that air puffer......the one that makes you jump and blink). Yours was normal or he would have said so. Out of interest if glaucoma does run in your family then you are eligible for a free test (UK).

no more masterbation

if you went to an optometrist or ophthalmologist in the US or UK, then you were tested for glaucoma, even if you didnt know you were.

there is not a single "glaucoma test". the air puff measures intraocular pressure, which is a risk factor for glaucoma, but the air puff by itself is definitely *not* a "glaucoma test"
