Do the eye drops for glaucoma stop you going blind or jsut slow you down? |
If not then is there anything that can stop glaucoma blinding you. glaucoma is progressive death of the nerve fiber layer of the retina , which is like cutting small wires in a thick bundle of a trunk of them. this means that with time you lose vision , the exact cause is not known yet , but the only association that we can manage is the elevated intraocular pressure , we decrease it as much as we can , to the point that the death of nerve fibers is minimal , and then we follow up , many people don't lose any more vision , but some keeps on losing vision . I think they stop you from going blind, when taken properly. The eye drops will slow down the effect of glaucoma but eventually blindness will occur. Caught at an early stage, the average time for this to happen is about 25 yrs. At the age of seventy, this will probably not be a problem if properly treated and monitored. Excess pressure in the eye slowly damages the optic nerve. One of the first signs of nerve and retinal damage is decreased peripheral vision. The field of vision gradually continues to deteriorate as time passes. I really wish people would know what they are talking about before telling people they're going to go blind. Glaucoma, if properly treated, will not lead to blindness. I also have glaucoma and it does NOT HAVE TO LEAD TO BLINDNESS. I have had the disease for 30 years already and it is yet UNTREATED. So don't panic. My pressures are 22 and 23 and should be treated, I'm quite sure, but my peripheral vision has not changed in all this time, the standard by which they can tell if your vision is truly being affected by the disease. If you use the eye drops your doctor gives you and attend your hospital appointments for check ups no you will not go blind with Glaucoma. People only have problems when the drops don't work . But there are other options. |
