I have been told i have signs of glaucoma by my optician and have been referred to the hospital for tests.?

If i do have glaucoma i have been told i will have to use drops every day for the rest of my life, does this mean that if i DONT use the drops i would certainly go blind ?

Once you have been diagnosed with GLAUCOMA, this will stay with you for the rest of your life. Like several other diseases (hypertension, diabetes, etc) there is NO CURE of glaucoma. There is no medical or surgical treatment that will REMOVE the glaucoma, but there are medical and surgical treatments (including LASER treatment) to CONTROL the disease process.

Untreated glaucoma will inevitably lead to irreversible blindness, but with proper treatment, the possibility of blindness can be prevented.

Whether medical or surgical treatment is required to control glaucoma is best determined after you are properly evaluated by an ophthalmologist.

Please see an ophthalmologist first before worrying about having glaucoma. For all you know, you might not have it, and you would have been worrying over nothing.

yes

Sometimes with glaucoma you can have an operation which will clear the problem x

it is very impt to adhere to the doctor as regards glaucoma because any slipup could send you down hill so pliz use the medication eyesight is something you cant take for granted if u have any questions as regards the drops or you dont like them for a particular reason its better you tell hi about it rather than stop

Please dont worry, this is the worse case scenareo. There are other possibilities for treatment. The eye drops are to treat occular pressure. However laser surgery can be done also. Luckily, you have been diagnosed quickly and so treatments can start before any serious damage has occcured. The hospital will advise you following tests about treatment options. Try not to worry.

My wife had it for 15 yrs
Started smoking pot and in 5 yrs all gone
even had to go get tested twice to be sure
Bad stuff drops didn't do much for wife
Lived in Oregon where she had a medical Marijuana card so was legal for her

I have to use eye drops for rest of my life but it
ain`t no big problem, also have eye tests, soon to go in hospital for operation, cant wait for that, and maybe
sort things. So don`t worry to much, you soon get used
to putting eye drops in, feels like Ive been doing it all
my life.Good luck

Glaucoma is a condition where up on pressure of the fluid in the eyes is so high that it causes damage.
a minimal of pressure is required to maintain the shape of the eye but excessive pressure may result in the compression and obstruction of small blood vessels.
The result is nerve fibre destruction and gradual loss of sight
however eye drops either twice per day or once per will relieve the pressure and in return help to keep your sight. You will be required to have check ups twice year or even every three months until the pressure has stabilised
Good Luck and welcome to the club

Some types of glaucoma can be treated by surgery, others not. If the only treatment for you is drops, then it is vitally important to use them. Failure to do so leads to IRREVERSIBLE damage to the retina -- you go blind. No cure for this.

READ THIS CAREFULLY

The anterior sits between your cornea and your iris, this chamber is filled by the aqeuos humour (fluid) which provides nutrients to the cornea, takes away waste and maintains the convex shape of the cornea. (this is because the cornea is aascular which means it has no blood cells)

This fluid is continually replacing itself, to maintain interocular pressure (the pressure within your eye, this is monitored when you have a sight test using the non contact tonometer which blows puffs of air onto the surface of your eye), the amount of aqeuous humour produced must be the same volume as what is drained away, variations can have a great influence the the inter ocular pressure.

Glaucoma is caused when there is either too much fluid being produced or not enough being drianed away. Decreased outflow may occur because of a blockage in the eye or through injury. Uncontrolled glaucoma can lead to loss of peripheral vision (basically sides - causes tunnel vision), and ultimately blindness.

The reason for this is as the pressure increases in the front of the eye, it pushes the vitreous humour (a jelly like substance in the eye which maintains spherical shape) backwards and into the retina, this causes the edges of the retina to peel away which causes the loss in peripheral vision.

Now, there are operations that can be performed, but the results aren't guarunteed and they depend on the individual.

If you have been given drops please use them. hope this helps
