Can you get Glandular Fever twice?

...like the Flu? Or is it like measles, where you get it once and then never again because your body builds an immunity?

Yeah - I've had it twice, both times I ended up in hospital. It's horrible whilst you've got it, but no long term effects ;-)

Yes u can get it twice!!

In fact, you CAN get measles twice too ...

The immune system does not always work perfectly and while most people ARE immune to Glandular Fever (aka Infectious Mononucleosis) once they have it the first time, some people are not able to fight it off the second time so well. This could be due to:

- bad luck - your immune system didn't do such a good job
- immunosuppression - your immune system is not top notch because of some other disease (HIV/AIDS, diabetes, SCID) or some medications which suppress it partly.

I had glandular fever when I was 16. Apparently, it is the Epstein Barr virus. Once it is in your system, it is there to stay. Some people report reocurrances which muct be flare ups when they are run down. It's like a cold sore. The virus causing it doesn't leave you. The first 'attack' is always the worse. I felt ill for months afterwards though.

Yes its a viral infection also known as The Kissing Disease!!

Yeah i've had it twice due to kissing a dirty pig as he put me through excruciating pain with it. now i get tonsilitis which the doc thinks is connected.

Infectious Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or the cytomegalovirus (CMV). Both viruses are members of the herpesvirus family. Although the great majority of cases of mononucleosis are caused by the E.B. virus, cytomegalovirus can produce a similar illness, usually with less throat pain. Due to the presence of the atypical lymphocytes on the blood smear in both conditions, most clinicians include both infections under the diagnosis of "mononucleosis." Symptoms similar to those of mononucleosis can be caused by adenovirus and the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii.
Please see the webpages for more details on Glandular fever (Infectious mononucleosis).
