Will a vet's lab notice the difference between human and cat poop?

I am trying to get tested for Giardiasis (Giardia) as my symptoms match exactly but my local hospital said Giardia was unlikely because I haven't travelled much recently and gave me salt and painkiller after a 3 hour wait. Called 14 local GP's but they all require registration which takes up to a week and they won't necessarily agree to do the test anyway. My vet will test my cat stool sample on demand. If I add a second human sample for the vet to test....will the vet's lab know the difference?

In the UK so its government tab...if i was in the US it would have been fixed by now.

I would say yes. Try having the test done privately, or go back and demand one if you are still having problems.

Yes, it is drastically different.

One of the strangest things I've ever read, I'm sure they would be able to tell as it would be made up of different things, good luck though....

Yes.
Return to the hospital and demand the test. Or go to your primary care doctor. Keep demanding it until they run the test. You are the paying for it.

yes cat poo looks almost like clay.but any way why not ask the vet will they check yours for the reasons you say are apparent.if you pay him the fee i don't see why he should object.

I sincerely doubt the lab will notice the difference (unless you send a whopping log which could never have been passed by your cat), but have you thought about what you're going to do if the result comes back positive? How are you going to convince a doctor to prescribe you the right antibiotic on the basis of a test result with your cat's name on the top?? If you are that convinced that you have giardia, then are you really going to believe the test result if it comes back negative? Also, the stool test is not the most sensitive: an enterotest is much better, and certainly not available from your local vet.

There are many many many other diseases with symptoms very similar to giardiasis (e.g., coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, pancreatic cancer, bacterial overgrowth, Whipple's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. etc. etc. this list is not exhaustive). If you don't believe me then google for these diagnoses and compare the descriptions with what you've got.

If it were possible to make a diagnosis of giardiasis on the basis of symptoms only, then no-one would have to do a lab test for giardia, would they? Focusing on only one diagnosis (which could possibly be the wrong diagnosis) could do you a lot more harm than good. If you are not happy that you have been thoroughly checked out, then you need to get a second opinion. Giardia is uncomfortable but it is not going to kill you. I suggest that it is worth waiting to get registered with a GP. If you are in the UK/Canada then ask for referral to a gastroenterologist. If you are in the US then you need to talk to family/friends about finding a good gastroenterologist.

I expect they will having seen thousands of cat stools and being familiar with the appearance and composition of said stools.

I doubt your vet will analyze your stool and I imagine he could go to jail if he would. He's not licensed to practice medicine in humans -- can you imagine if he started taking human patients just because the wait is too long at the human hospital.

I live in Italy where we have the same problem with delays in the public health system. Can't you go to a private clinic and get this done. I had a blood test done in four days at a private clinic that the public hospital here said was going to take 8 months (4 months until I could get an appointment and 4 months to get the results back)! Sure I paid for it, but when you consider the wait, it was worth it!
