Flagyl helped...but? |
I went to the doctor after having severe diarrhea for over a year. The specialist I went to did not run any blood tests, but was convinced it was more than likely Giardia. He gave me 14 days worth of Flagyl, which worked like a charm. About 2-3 weeks after I finished taking the antibotics, the diarrhea returned just like before. Diarrhea after every meal. I went to my regular doctor, for a regular appt and I told him what was going on. He drew blood and took a stool sample and I had no parasites, of anything like that. All looked totally normal and healthy, yet I am still having diarrhea. It will start for a few days and quit for a few days. I don't get it. Why did the Flagy help in the first place, and what now? The flagyl has two possible effects. First it is an antibiotic, second it also has an anti-inflammatory effect. You may have a case of C-defficle (sp). This is a really difficult strain of bacteria that can over grow in the gut and cause what you have. It commonly happens to people who have had surgery, or were on a antibiotic therapy and upset the natural balance in the gut. The flagyl was working on it but it came back when you quit after 14 days. It can take a long time to overcome it. Or you have an inflammatory bowel condition. What you may want to try is altering your diet to eliminate any gluten, and begin taking probiotics several times daily. See if this makes a difference and this will help you get to the root cause. |
