3 hour glucose tolerace test for gestational diabetes?

I flunked my first glucose test and have to take the 3 hour one. I was hypoglycemic before pregnancy, and I know that has to affect the results, because I can't eat anything for 12 hours before the test, then drinking the sugary drink will cause my blood sugar to skyrocket. Does that mean I have gestational diabetes? I know hypoglycemia is low blood sugar and diabetes is high. How do they tell the difference in the test? I've tried researching it and can't find anything online.

I'm also at risk for pre-term labor, as I've been having contractions already at 26 weeks, and I've been on bedrest periodically, so I'm worried about how it is going to affect that, as I can't exercise.

Ok well it is actaully, hypoglycemia (low) and hyperglycemia (high). Both are a form of diabetes.

The 3 hour test will tell them how it rates throughout the time. I would suggest first thing in the morning for the test and bring things that can entertain you.

My friend had to do this with hers and she flunked her first because of drinking something before. I would be sure to go over every detail before going and then be prepared.

Hypo - you don't eat and start feeling weak and have to eat sugary things to feel better.

Hyper- sugary things such as oranges, candy, etc. Make it go up and can if it goes up to high cause you to go into a diabetic coma.

Either are dangerous. If it is just gestational, you should not have a problem after birth, should go back to normal and baby should be fine too. Just your body not taking things right during pregnancy.

Diabetes is a problem regulation blood sugar. After you drink the suryp (when my wife was pregnant they let her eat a king sized snickers) the sugar is absorbed into your blood stream (blood sugar), and your pancrease releases insulin so that the cells of your body can actually absorb the glucose (sugar). If your pancrease cannot regulate insulin secretion the blood sugar may peak or valley. Since this is unhealthy for you and your baby, this condition is closely monitored.
They will take your blood sugar (finger prick) every hour or so and make sure it neither peaks or drops and stays ina normal range.

"normal" range for a glucose test is 80-120 mg/DL. But pregnancy makes everything go whacko. Glucose produces your energy in pregnancy , its important to maintain, especially if you were hypoglycemic to begin with. It generally can be controlled with diet.

Don't think of the first test as flunking it. Think instead of the health of both you and the baby. That is all they want to do, protect both mother and baby.

40 years ago they didn't test us! There was a question on the patient info on if any one in the family had diabetes, then it was more or less ignored.

They look at both the amount of sugar in your system, A1c, fasting glucose finger prick, and your background info.

Take needlework, book to read, something to take up the time of sitting and waiting. For sure they don't want you pacing up and down the hallways.

There are whole days when your initial finger prick, or the A1c blood draw, had an abnormal amount of glucose sticking to the red blood cells. This is why they do the other tests for followup.

Honey, don't worry about this. Just think healthy happy baby, under 9 pounds!!!
