Ugh.. gestational diabetes..im so confused?

Ok, so i just got the call from my ob... I have failed my 3 hour gestational diabetes test. (I also failed my 1 hour test, my level was over 200). So i am going to the doctor and then the the nurse & dietician this week. my ob said that my gluecose level (from my 3 hour test) was 145-ish. What is the average gluecose level for a pregnant woman? I am a little confused... Please give me any info you can! THANKS!
Oh- I am 28.5 weeks pregnant with #2
My first baby was 10lb 3.5oz and i did NOT have G.D.
I am 23 years old.
I had a c-section with #1, planning a c-section with this baby also.

The one hour test i failed was the first test i did -on monday 1/14/08 (my level was 200+), then i took the 3 hour the following friday, 1/18/08, and she said my level was 145.

I went through all of this stuff early in my pregnancy, and then it somehow went away when they tested me again to see how much insulin they were going to put me on.

With the OGTT here is where you should be:
Glucose tolerance diagnostic test (for gestational diabetes) 100 g of glucose
Fasting: Less than 95 mg/dL or 5.2 mmol/L
1-hour: Less than 180 mg/dL or 10.0 mmol/L
2-hour: Less than 155 mg/dL or 8.6 mmol/L
3-hour: Less than 140 mg/dL or 7.7 mmol/L

So, yeah 200 at 1 hour is over. Did you make sure to fast? And did they have you load your carbs for a few days before? I don't know why that makes a difference, but it does. My doc had me do it for my second test.

Is the baby already bigger than it is supposed to be at this point? You may be able to control it with some diet changes. That will be up to you and the doctors though. The dietitian put me on a diabetic diet. I was pretty much eating all the time, but little to no carbs or sugars. If I did have them it was in small portions, and spread out through out the day.

I was on this crazy diet for like a week and a half, and lost 7 lbs. I think I was like 16 weeks pregnant at the time. So, when the doctor saw me next, he said absolutely no diet. I shouldn't be loosing weight like that. He said eat normal for a month, track my glucose levels, and then we will do another OGTT to determine how much insulin I needed. And you know the rest, It ended up going away. My levels were really high for the first test too though, and the visits to the doctor in between. They originally saw glucose in my urine, and tested me at 242, which is insanely high.

Good news is, it usually goes away after the birth. If you do have it, it will force you to have a healthy pregnancy, well at least for the rest of it, or you will probably have an even bigger baby than last time. And if you do need insulin, it is safe for you and the baby, and will definitely be easier than the diet.

I ate a lot of jerky, cheese, veggies, large portions of meat with like a bite of rice, or potato. It just gets old. Good luck, and if they have you test again before doing anything, ask them about loading up on carbs for like 2 days prior to get a more accurate reading.

OK, relax. You are borderline. 145 is not too bad and 200, well that is not good. When you see the dietitian he/she will recommend a low sugar/salt diet as well as low carbs. Since your glucose counts are not too high it is likely this will pass after your child is born. Do the right thing for the rest of your pregnancy for you and the baby. Good luck.

gestational diabetes is not uncommon. But I believe that if you have it now, somewhere down the road you could probably develope non gestational diabetes so watch your diet and learn how to keep it at bay....there are many ways nutritionally to alter your possible genetic predisposition

I had gestational 2 years ago. I controlled it with diet...I am sorry I dont remember my numbers.
But I do know that after I had her (she was healthy 7"12).....
About 8 weeks my blood sugar was still high.
I moved to a new town and went to the dr. And about 13 weeks later my fasting was good.
And to this day it is in the 90's....so its ok, and no symptoms of diabetes. But I do eat low carb/no sugar just because after I had it and the diet I had it stuck with me.
Take Care and congratulations.

gestional diabetes is diabetes when pregnant when having it when your pregnant u and u child have a high chance of devolping diabetes later in life u as a mother have a chance within the next 10 years. Having G.D usally doesn't affect the birth or the pregnacy to much it just means watch what u eat and excercise(not extensive, like walking)
